바벨탑 미술품이 6일(현지시간) 러시아 칼루가의 니콜라 레니베츠 현대 미술 공원에서 마슬레니차(Maslenitsa) 축하 행사의 일환으로 태워지고 있다.

마슬레니차(Maslenitsa)는 러시아에서 매년 러시아정교회의 사순절 직전 일주일 동안 열리는 봄맞이 축제이다.

과거 고대 슬라브족 시대에는 허수아비를 축제 마지막 날에 태워 재를 땅에 흩뿌리곤 했다. 이는 죽은 이를 기리는 의식으로 장례식을 의미했으며, 땅에서의 풍성한 수확을 바라는 의식이기도 했다. 이후 장례식의 의미는 사라지고 다 함께 기뻐하며 신나게 즐기는 축제로 변화됐다. 인형 태우기는 추운 겨울을 태워 보내고 새로운 봄을 맞이하는 의미를 갖게 됐다.

한편, 러시아인들이 축제 기간 주로 먹는 팬케이크 블리니(blini)는 둥그런 모양의 태양을 상징한다. 태양은 따듯한 봄을 상징하기 때문에 봄을 맞이하는 마슬레니차에는 온 가족이 모여 팬케이크를 나눠먹곤 한다. 가능한 많은 블리니를 먹는데, 블리니가 따듯한 봄 이외에도 풍성한 수확, 축복받은 결혼, 건강한 아이 등을 의미하기 때문이다.

축제가 끝나면 고기, 우유, 유제품, 계란, 파티, 세속음악, 춤 등 종교 의식을 방해하는 모든 것이 금지되는 사순절이 시작되기 때문에 축제 기간에 이웃과 친척들을 초대해 각종 유제품을 활용한 후한 식사를 대접하곤 한다.

러시아의 주요 도시 곳곳에서 일주일 동안 열리는 마슬레니차는 각 날마다 특별한 의미를 상징한다.

먼저 축제의 시작인 월요일은 환영을 의미한다. 이날에는 짚으로 마슬레니차 인형을 만들어 각양각색의 천으로 장식을 한다. 겨울을 상징하는 인형은 축제의 마지막 날에 태워버린다.

화요일은 신나게 노는 날을 의미한다. 공원 등지에서는 여러 사람들이 모여 민속놀이를 하거나 썰매 타기, 눈싸움 등의 오락 활동을 한다. 특히, 이날에는 미혼 남성들이 호감을 갖던 미혼 여성들에게 구애를 하여 새로운 커플이 만들어지고 부활절이 지난 일요일에 이들의 결혼이 이루어지는 오랜 풍습이 전해진다.

수요일에는 여성에게 구혼을 한 예비 사위들이 예비 장모를 방문한다. 예비 장모들은 수많은 팬케이크를 대접하고 파티를 연다. 팬케이크인 블리니를 활용해서 다양한 음식을 만들어 먹는다.

목요일은 축제의 정점을 이루는 날로, 가장 인기 있는 축제 놀이 중 하나인 주먹싸움이 벌어진다.

금요일은 사위들이 장모를 저녁 식사에 초대하여 대접하는 날이며, 토요일은 아내들이 시누이들을 대접하며 좋은 관계를 위해 노력하는 날이다.

마지막 일요일은 용서의 날을 의미한다. 기독교 전통이 반영된 것으로 만일 누군가가 죄를 짓거나 실수를 해도 그가 사과를 한다면 용서해 주어야 한다. 반대로 자신도 사과를 하면 용서를 받을 수 있으며 용서를 통해 새로운 관계를 형성한다.
